The Scalawags

FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1359

The Scalawags are an FRC team based in Lebanon, Oregon. We have been around since 2004, when we branched off of an Albany team. Over the years, the Scalawags have become recognized for our outstanding imagery and have melded into the town’s culture. The Scalawags are a crucial part of the Lebanon community, going to many local events with our t-shirt cannon and competition bots, handing out candy on Main Street for Halloween, and shooting t-shirts at pep assemblies. Our proudest brain child is our Junior Robotics program, where we bring fourth through eighth graders into our shop once a month to learn about FIRST, how to use power tools, STEAM topics, and engineering challenges. Our five year plan includes starting multiple FIRST Lego League teams, expanding the influence of STEAM in this rural area.

Are the Scalawags part of the Lebanon Community School District?

We are not affiliated with any school district, although we are temporarily sharing space in a classroom at the Lebanon High School. Team 1359 is a Boy Scout Venture Crew, allowing us to draw kids from Lebanon, Scio, Sweethome, Lacomb, and home school programs.

What is FIRST?

FIRST is an acronym meaning For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, but it’s about much more than just that. FIRST is a worldwide organization inspiring love for STEAM(science, technology, engineering, art, and math), teaching kids valuable soft skills, and creating healthy environments for students to learn, question, and grow. It offers programs for kids age 18 all the way down to kids age 6 through FIRST Lego League Junior(FLLJr), FIRST Lego League(FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge(FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition(FRC). The Scalawags are an FRC team, competing with over 4,000 other teams around the globe. To learn more about FIRST, you can go to
